A companion for the walk
I came to spiritual direction sideways — not chasing a title, but following an invitation into a stream of walking with God I barely knew was there.
A few years ago, I felt God leading me into the Spiritual Direction program at Denver Seminary — not because I had any plans to become a director, but because I sensed an invitation to swim in a stream of walking with God that was largely unfamiliar to me.
Some of what I encountered there felt like coming home; much of it was genuinely new, drawing on both ancient and modern ways of meeting God and one another. I graduated in July 2023, and I’m still discovering what that season opened up in me.
It was in the practicum work of the program — both receiving direction and learning to offer it — that I fell in love. Not with directing, exactly, but with something quieter: being a partner with others in noticing the prior and ongoing wooing and work of the Spirit of God in their lives, and in my own.

That posture has stayed with me. For over twenty years, I’ve had the gift of facilitating and interceding with various ministries, in nearly twenty countries and across the U.S. The thread running through all of it has been the same — compassionately helping people ask honest questions of themselves and with God, toward a more intimate, conversational relationship with Him.
The name came out of conversation with God, not branding strategy. I’ve never been comfortable with pretense or being set above anyone — and, for what it’s worth, I’m 5’3”, so the name fit in more ways than one.
It was only later that I learned Francis of Assisi called himself by the same title. I’ve come to deeply admire his way of walking with God, and I’m glad, in hindsight, for the company.
